Musamam (the original)
Mandarin, lavender and saffron open it, moving into rosy geranium, dry cedarwood and amberwood, and finishing on incense, akigalawood and cistus. Fully unisex, refined and dry rather than sweet. About 8 hours on skin. This is the fragrance to buy if someone says “Musamam” without specifying — the two Intense flankers are different scents entirely.
Musamam White Intense — the Crystal Noir with the coconut still in it
Versace Crystal Noir (2004) built its reputation on warm spice, creamy coconut and sandalwood — but current reformulations of Crystal Noir have reduced or dropped the coconut. Musamam White Intense shares four of its notes and its overall structure, with the coconut front and centre: bergamot and orange up top, coconut, ylang-ylang and ambroxan in the heart, sandalwood, musk and benzoin underneath. Brighter and cleaner than the Versace, not a note-for-note clone.
Musamam Black Intense — not a dupe of anything
The odd one out, deliberately. Lattafa commissioned Givaudan to create an exclusive molecule for this release — Cocoa Pulse™, a cocoa-butter-and-Akigalawood accord — built into the fragrance by perfumer Jordi Fernández. Because it’s a licensed captive molecule, it can’t legally be cloned by other “dupe” houses. Opens sharp with lavender, sage, bergamot and nutmeg, moves into cedar, geranium and Rosyfolia, and settles on the cocoa-woody base that gives it its name.
