And it is a magnificent mango — ripe, pulpy, faintly resinous, cut with lemon and a spike of fresh ginger. One wearer put it best: it smells like walking towards a juice shop in a hot country. Another said that despite everything else on the note list, the only thing you ultimately smell is mango — and he meant it as high praise.

So let’s talk about what this actually is, rather than what the name suggests.

Top — Mango, Grapefruit, Lemon, Ginger. The mango arrives immediately and it does not leave. It’s a proper ripe one — juicy, pulpy, with that faintly piney, slightly resinous edge real mango skin has. Grapefruit and lemon cut through the sweetness and keep it from turning into squash, and ginger adds a warm, spicy little kick that stops the whole thing being simply a fruit. It is joyful and it is instant.

Heart — Jasmine, Cedarwood, Violet. Underneath, quietly, a floral-woody frame. Jasmine adds a creamy sweetness, violet a powdery softness, and cedar a dry woody spine. You won’t pick these out individually — and that’s the point. They exist to give the mango somewhere to sit.

Base — Ambergris, Oakmoss, Benzoin, Woods. And here’s what saves it from being a fruit juice. Oakmoss brings a green, earthy, faintly bitter grounding; ambergris adds a warm, radiant, skin-like glow; benzoin a soft resinous sweetness. One wearer described the drydown beautifully: the mango slowly gets reintegrated into the forest, becoming fertiliser for the trees. It’s a lovely, unexpected ending to a fruit bomb.
